Daniel Carhart Dies at Hospital Of Heart Attack
Had Seemed to Rally After Stroke 10 Days Ago
Was Laclede Engineer
Ill Two Weeks But Returned to Work at Plant
Apparently improved from a heart attack suffered Wednesday morning, the second in 10 days, Daniel Louis Carhart of 1411 Spaulding avenue, 51, engineer at the plant of the LaClede Steel Co., took an unexpected turn for the worse this morning and died at 10:20 a. m., in St. Joseph's Hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 6.
Carhart was moved to the hospital 10 days ago following a collapse at work. After his removal there he has shown improvement until yesterday morning when he suffered the second attack.
Thought He Had Cold
Prior to his collapse at work, two weeks ago, Carhart had been ailing, but he believed he was suffering with nothing more serious than a cold and, after remaining at home for a couple days, resumed his work at the Laclede Steel Co. plant where he had been employed for six years.
His death this morning came at a time when he was believed to be improving and before a son, Robert H., who is employed in St. Louis, could be summoned to his bedside.
Mr. Carhart was born in Alton. His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Carhart, for many years had lived at Seventh and Langdon streets.
His marriage to Miss Pearl Hamilton, who survives him, took place in Alton Nov. 21, 1907. To this union seven children were born. After his marriage Carhart was employed in the Hoppe toy store on West Third street, but his longest business connection was with the Owens-Illinois Glass Co. for whom he had worked for 26 years.
Was Methodist
His early church affiliation was with the Methodist denomination and for many years he had been a regular attendant at First Methodist Church.
During the time Mr. Carhart had been in the hospital, a son-in-law, Cecil Andrews was a patient at St. Anthony's Infirmary where he had undergone an operation, and Mrs. Andrews had divided her time in the last 10 days between the two institutions attending her husband and her father.
Besides his widow, and daughter, Mrs. Andrews, he is survived by five children, Helen, Robert H., George, Betty and Daniel jr. One child died in infancy. He also leaves a brother, Frank Carhart, of New York, and three sisters, Mrs. Charles Norman and Miss Elizabeth Jane Carhart of Alton, and Mrs. William McHenry of Elizabeth, N. J.
A son of Mrs. McHenry, Norwood McHenry, had visited at the bedside of his uncle Monday, stopping here on his way to New Jersey while in this area on business.
