OBITUARY
Carhart (Eliza Rundell), at her home in Mapleton, Sept 19, 1902, aged 91 years, 1 month and 8 days.
Sister Carhart was born in County Cornwall, England, August 11, 1811, of good, sturdy English ancestry, and early showed the traits of a strong and admirable character. She was converted in early youth and united with Bible Christians, a branch of Methodism. She was united in marriage with Stephen Carhart November 20th, 1841. Of this union were born 7 children, five of whom, four sons and one daughter survive them, to emulate their virtues and cherish their memory. Deceased came to America with her husband in 1842, settling at Platteville, Wis. They moved to Iowa in 1869, living successively in Hardin, Hamilton, and Story Counties, finally settling in 1890, from whence Stephen Carhart was called home January 5, 1805.
Sister Carhart was a woman of strong character and individuality, all powerfully suffused and controlled by deep and genuine piety. Salvation through Christ was her theme and song, and her life told the same story which obtained for her and her religion the reverence and respect of all who knew her. Her faith and confidence in God were boundless. Modern doubt found no place in her heart, and amid shifting things she stood like a steadfast monument, saying to all by the way: "This is the way, walk ye in it." Such a life is powerful for good, and the world is better for her living, and many souls by the way have been helped, cheered, encouraged, who but for her might have gone down in the strife. She leaves a rich heritage to her children and her children's children to the remotest generation, in strong and holy character and stainless life. She suffered much at time for several years. Her hold on life was so tenacious that the parting was deferred and painful, finally dying in peace and and triumph. She was happy in being most lovingly watched over and ministered to by all her living children in her last years, and especially by her daughter Bessie who, with rare gentleness, devoted herself to her mother's care. "Verily they have their reward." She was buried from the M. E. Church Sunday, September 21st, the writer preaching her funeral sermon from her own favorite text: Zech. 14:7. "And is shall come to pass that at eveningtime it shall be light." A multitude gathered to pay tribute of respect and lay her lovingly away in Mount Hope Cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. She rests from her labors and her works do follow her.
