William DeVesty of Navesink died at the Hahnemann hospital at New York on Tuesday of last week. He had been taken to the hospital to be operated on for appendicitis. He was 52 years old. He had been sick all winter with pneumonia and was recovering from this disease when he was taken sick with appendicitis. On the Saturday before his death he walked to Atlantic Highlands. On Monday morning he complained of severe pain and Dr. G. D. Fay was sent for. Dr. Fay said that Mr. Devesty had appendicitis and that his only hope of recovery was in having an operation performed. Mr. Devesty was taken to New York the same day and the operation was performed the next morning. He rallied sufficiently after the operation to recognize his wife and daughter, who were at his bedside. On Tuesday afternoon he began to sink and about midnight he died. In performing the operation for appendicitis the doctors discovered that he had a tumor of the stomach and they saw at once that there was but little hope of his recovery.
Mr. Devesty came to Middletown township when he was fourteen years old. He first worked for Elnathan T. Field of Middletown. For the past 26 years he had worked for Joseph Lufburrow of Atlantic Highlands, and drove a butcher wagon through Navesink and the Highlands, on Mr. Lufburrow's route. A wife and five children survive him. His children are William, Charles, Howard and Della Devesty and Mrs. Lou Card. The funeral was held at the Navesink Methodist church on Thursday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Nickelson had charge of the service. The body was buried at Bay View Cemetery.
