Joseph W. Carhart
One of the oldest members of the church of Christ in this vicinity, passed peacefully to his eternal resting, at about 4 o'clock last Saturday morning, aged 82 years and 6 months.
Mr. Joseph W. Carhart has been identified with the work of Christianity and the interests of Methodism this county beyond the reconciliation of nine-tenths of those living at the present day. It was while attending a prayer meeting held about 66 years ago, at the house of Mr. Timothy Murphy, father of the late Francis and William Murphy, near Bethany, that he was impressed with the fact that Mr. Murphy was the only praying man present, and this led him to meditation and resulted in his conviction and conversion. At that time there was no Methodist church anywhere in this vicinity - not even the old parish church which was afterward built at Bethany, 3 miles east of Matawan. In 1836 a few families in Matawan had joined the Methodist society, and a class was formed with Mr. Joseph Carhart as leader. They met each other week at the residence of Joel Aumack, at Mount Pleasant, the house that has been purchased and remodeled by Mrs. S. Faye.
The members were Joel Aumack and wife, the parents of Mrs. Holmes V. Walling; Elisha Walling and wife, parents of Holmes and Sidney Walling, John Summerlays, and Miss Ann Van Pelt, who afterwards became Mrs. Joe; Carhart. He continued the leader of this class until his brother, Joel Carhart, removed to Matawan (then Middletown Point), whom the men of the class were transferred to him.
In addition to this he was for over 30 years a licensed ?? in the church, his license being renewed every year as long as he lived, though he was not for years able to do active work. He used to hold meetings about the country, going to Granville, Morrisville, Harmony, Etc...
He was on of the founders and official members of the old Bethany Church, and was a warm supporter of the society until his membership was transferred to the Keyport Church. He was, during his active life, acknowledged as a good reasoner and sound theological debater.
He was born near Bethany; was the son of Thomas and Mary Carhart, and was a brother of Joel Carhart, who still survives him and lives near New Brunswick.
The funeral took places at the Keyport M. E. Church, at 10:30 o'clock, on Monday morning last, and was largely attended. Revs. S.F. Wheeler and F. L. Alles officiated. The sermon was presented by Rev. Wheeler, from Revelations vs 18 - "Write, blessed are the dead that die in the Lord," etc.
After the funeral services, the remains were taken to Raritan Cemetery for interment.
Joseph wrote his Will and Testament on 23 Apr 1866 in Raritan, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States. His estate was submitted for probate by sons Richard A. Carhart and Edwin Carhart on 2 Jan 1879. Will:
