On 6 Dec 1876, Joshua's wife, Sarah A., started probate proceedings in the King County, New York Surrogate Court. She identified five living children of Joshua: John Carhart; Urania, wife of William Wren; Janet, wife of George Fisher; Mary E. Carhart; and William E. Carhart. On 8 Dec 1876, Joshua's son, William E. Carhart, petitioned the Court stating that Sarah was not able to exercise the duties of the administrator of the estate because she was not able to read or write. He futher stated that Mary E. Carhart was insane and in the care of the Kings County Charity Commissioners at the Asylum at Flatbush. His petition requested that Urania Wren be appointed as adminitrator of Joshua's estate. Administration of Joshua's estate was granted to Urania Wren on 8 Dec 1876.
