John Carhartt
SOLVANG -- John Palms Carhartt, 77, a rancher and land developer, died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital, Santa Barbara.
Mr. Carhartt was born Oct. 14, 1912, at Grosse Point, Mich. He was the grandson of Hamilton Carhartt of Carhartt Overalls, a firm that had factories in Paris, London and Detroit.
Formerly of Pasadena, he attended Pasadena City College before transferring to the University of Kentucky, where he graduated. While in Pasadena, he served as president of a group called Pasadena Beautiful. Mr. Carhartt served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
A county resident for 40 years, Mr. Carhart had a home in Santa Barbara and lived on weekends at his Solvang ranch. He belonged to the Los Caballeros and the Ranchero Vistadores.
Mr. Carhartt is survived by his wife Marion Carhartt of Santa Barbara; a son, Michael Carhartt of Los Olivos; two daughters, Annette Brandin of South Pasadena and Shelley Kelley of Evergreen, Colo.; a sister Corrine Abell of Greenbrae; a brother, Thomas Carhartt of Ohio; and seven grandchildren.
His son, John Palms Carhartt Jr., died in 1979.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Ballard, with the Rev. Cyril Kelleher of Old Mission Santa Ines officiating.
Loper Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
