William died at the age of 51 on 14 Mar 1905 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana, United States. He was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery (Section 6, Lot 405), Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana, United States [Find A Grave Memorial #28618963]. William's obituary was published 29 Mar 1905 in the "Shoe Retailer and Boots and Shoes Weekly", Volume 53, page 65:
William N. Carhart, aged 51, one of the best known shoe merchants in Terre Haute, Ind., and a member of the firm of Rhoades & Carhart, Wabash avenue and Fifth street, died at his home, 416 Second avenue, March 14, of a complication of diseases.
Mr. Carhart had been in failing health for nearly two years, and during that period had been confined to his bed for several weeks at a time. His last illness dates from about six weeks ago. Mr. Carhart went to Terre Haute from Alton, Ill, 14 years ago and engaged in the shoe business with C. B. Rhoades, the father of the present partner, Elmer Rhoades. Mr. Rhoades, senior, died at Fort Wayne about two years ago. When the partnership between Mr. Rhoades, Sr. and Mr. Carhart was dissolved, the son became a member of the firm.
The deceased was a native of Alton. He was a member of Amico Lodge of the Odd Fellows. He is survived by his wife.
