Mr. and Mrs. Norman observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1942 and in celebration of the event a reception, attended by more than 70 relative and friends, was held at Camp Talahi.

Charles died at the age of 1955 in Alton, Madison, Illinois, United States. He was buried in Vahala Memorial Park, Godfrey, Madison, Illinois, United States [Find A Grave Memorial #142479215]. Charles' obituary was published in the Alton Telegraph, Alton, Madison, Illinois, United States:
River Man, Dies
Charles Norman, 88, veteran river man, died Friday at 7:30 p.m., in St. Joseph's Hospital where he had been a patient since Feb. 19.
Mr. Norman engaged in enterprises associated with the river for more than half a century. He started his career in river transportation in 1904, after he retired from the jewelry business in Alton because of ill health, and his doctor advised that he be out in the open.
He disposed of his store and moved to the bluffs, west of Hop Hollow, to a place known as Norman's Landing. His boats have plied the Mississippi for nearly a half century.
From 1911 to 1913 he operated a ferry for the late Capt. W. D. Fluent, and from 1913 to 1918 was in the wholesale mussel shell business. In 1920 he formed the Norman Trading & Transportation Co.
The company was busy in its early years in transporting apples and cider from Calhoun County to markets in Alton and St. Louis. In later years Mr. Norman increased his fleet of boats and dredges and as recently as 1949 equipped them with steel hulls.
While he had turned his business over to his sons in 1947, and it then became the Norman Bros., Inc., he had remained a guiding hand in the business.
He had an important part in the building of the McAdams Parkway along the Mississippi from Grafton to Alton, as much of the stone was quarried from rock on the Norman place.
Charles Norman was born May 20, 1866 in Cayuga County, Ontario, Canada. He moved with his family to New York in early life and came to Illinois in 1875.
He was married in 1892 to Miss Mable Carhart of Alton. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1942. Mrs. Norman died two years later.
Surviving are five sons, Ranaldo A. Norman of Indianapolis, Ind.; Otero, William, M.E., and Charles Jr., of Godfrey; three daughters, Mrs. Bruce Elliott, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; Mrs. Earl Radcliff, Brighton, and Mrs. DeL Reid, Godfrey; 22 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Louise, and his wife preceded him in death.
The body is at Gent Funeral Home where friends may call after 7:30 p.m. today. Funeral rites will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home by the Rev. William Robertson, pastor of North Alton Baptist Church, Burial will be in Valhala Memorial Park.
