Helen Johnson Carhartt, a resident of Bethesda Care Center in Canon City, died Saturday after a lengthy illness. She was 91.
Mrs. Carhartt was a homemaker.
She was born June 1, 1897 in Altman to Andrew C. and Carrie Peterson Johnson. Her family purchased a farm near Eastlake when she was 6. She attended rural schools in Henderson. She later attended Denver Opportunity, Barnes Business School and the University of Denver.
She married Forrest Carhartt July 3, 1922, at Golden. He survives. The couple lived in Grand Junction for 40 years before moving to Canon City in 1982.
Mrs. Carhartt was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Canon City. She was a charter member and president of the P.E.O., and president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 37 in Grand Junction. She initiated Colorado Columbine Girls State in Grand Junction. She also was a member of the Ladies of Veterans of World War II and of the Beausceant Auxiliary of the Knights Templars.
Other survivors include two sons, Wesley of Canon City and Dr. Forrest "Andy" Carhartt of Boulder; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A sister, Ruth Johnson Satt, is deceased.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Christ Episcopal Church in Canon City. Cremation will take place and burial will be determined at a later date.

Forrest M. Carhartt of Canon City, a retired U.S. Army colonel, died there Sunday. He was 92.
At one time, Mr. Carhartt owned and operated Carhartt Investment Co. in Grand Junction.
He was born Feb. 2, 1897 in Albia, Iowa, where he spent his childhood. He moved to Ogden, Utah, where he completed high school. He earned a scholarship to the University of Denver, where he received a bachelor's degree and later a master of divinity degree.
He married Helen Grace Johnson on July 3, 1932, in Golden. She died in 1988.
Mr. Carhartt joined the National Guard in 1916 and served in the Mexican Border War, and World Wars I and II. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific on General McArthur's staff in Australia, New Guinea, Java, the Philippines and Tasmania, where he worked with the natives.
He retired in 1958 after 42 years of military service, and moved to Grand Junction. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the World War I Club.
Mr. Carhartt was a lay reader for St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the El Jebel Shrine, the Last Squad Club and the Rotary Club. At one time he was a municipal judge.
In 1982 Mr. Carhartt moved to Canon City, where he was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include two sons, Wesley of Canon City, and Dr. Forrest of Boulder; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was scheduled for 10 this morning at Christ Episcopal Church in Canon City. Cremation has taken place. The ashes will be interred in Veterans Cemetery in Grand Junction at a later date.
