Harry E. Walling
Mr. Harry E. Walling, son of Spafford Walling, of Oak Grove, died on Sunday from an accident which happened the Thursday before. Mr. Walling was oiling the engine on the Mary J. Fleming, a freight boat of the Merchants' line, when the boat collided with a barge, in Newark bay, throwing Mr. Walling in the machinery. One foot was crushed, his side and head hurt, besides being badly bruised. He was taken to the S. R. Smith infirmary at Stapleton, S.I., when the foot was amputated and later a second amputation above the knee was found necessary. Blood poisoning set in and he died on Sunday. Undertaker Bedle went to Stapleton, on Monday, in Captain Henry Smith's naptha launch and brought the body to Keyport.
Mr. Walling was 25 years, 1 month and 27 days old. He was married to Miss Mary Carhart, daughter of Henry Carhart. She, with one child, survives him.
The funeral took place from the residence of his father, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. A.H. Young, D.D. of Matawan, officiating, assisted by Rev. James L. Coote, of this place. Mrs. Ella C. Bedle sang two solos. the interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Harry E. Walling of Matawan Meets a Tragic Death.
Harry E. Walling, son of Spafford W. Walling of Matawan township, died on Monday of last week as the result of an injury sustained the previous Wednesday. He was employed as fireman on the steamboat Fleming, which plies between New York and Newark. While oiling the engine the boat was run into and the sudden jar threw him into the revolving machinery, breaking his left leg. The leg was amputated, but gangrene set in and caused his death. Mr. Walling was 25 years old. A wife and one child survive him. He leaves also a sister, Mrs. A. N. Lambertson of Matawan.
Mae married second James S. Black (9092) in 1904 in New Jersey, United States. James was born in 1878 in Connecticut, United States.
James died at the age of 52 in 1930.

MATAWAN
Services were held last week for Mae Black, 106, who died March 3 at the Mt. Pleasant Manor Nursing Home.
Born in Camden, she lived in E. Orange before moving to Matawan in 1973.
Mrs. Black retired in 1948 after 25 years as a sales clerk at Kresge's department store in Newark.
Previously, she had worked on a farm until 1925. She attributed rigorous farm life as the reason for her long life. She said her years on the farm were her happiest.
"Hard work keeps you young," she said.
Mrs. Black was a member of the First Baptist Church Matawan.
Surviving are her grand-daughter, Doris White, Plantation, Fla., two great granddaughters and three great-great-granddaughters.
Burial was at Green Grove Cemetery, Keyport.
The Bedle Funeral Home, Matawan, was in charge of arrangements.
