In the name of God, Amen, the eleventh day of February, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six, I, Cornelius Carhart, Senr., of Mansfield, in the County of Sussex, and State of New Jersey, being of sound mind and memory, and calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, principally, and first of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God, who gave it, and for my body, I recommend it to the earth to be buried in Christianlike and decent manner, at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting, but at the resurrection I shall receive the same again, by the power of God; and as touching such worldly estate, wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in manner and form as following, viz.: In the first place I order that my funeral charges and just debts be paid, likewise, as soon after my decease as may be convenient, I order that my executors hereinafter named, do cause an inventory of all my movable estate to be taken, except such articles as will be hereafter named, and to dispose of them to the best advantage at vendue. And my will is, that the amount of the sales of such movables, after paying my funeral charges and my just debts, be divided amongst my children, and my dearly beloved wife, as undernamed, share and share alike, viz.:
Cornelius, Robert, Samuel and John Carhart, Mary, wife of Robert McShane, Sarah, wife of John Dusenbury, Lydia, wife of James Bowlby, Williamphy, wife of Benjamin Lacy, and Phebe, wife of John Coleman, and my wife, Williamphy. And likewise my will is, that my widow do live in the new house, on the homestead farm, and that my sons, Samuel Carhart and John Carhart, do pay or cause to be paid to my widow, five pounds each, yearly and each year during her natural life, and likewise I order that my son John Carhart do provide, or cause to be provided, everything necessary for my widow's maintenance, and that in a decent and genteel manner; and likewise my will is, that my widow have for her own proper use, out of my movable estate as under: one feather bed and bedstead and bedding complete, one chest, the dresser, and what may go on it, three chairs, one table, half dozen knives and forks, and what linen or woollen yarn may be on hand at my decease. My will is that my widow have what she chooses for her own use, and likewise one cow, and choice of the flock, three sheep and large brass kettle. Likewise I give unto my son, Robert Carhart, a certain bond of fifty pounds, with what interest may be due thereon, which I have against Cornelius Carhart, Jr., due May the first, one thousand eight hundred and two. Likewise I give and bequeath to my two grandsons, John D. Carhart and Daniel Carhart, ten pounds each, to be paid out of my movable estate. Likewise I give and bequeath to my son John Carhart, one bay horse and young brown mare, wagon and harness for two horses, one plough and irons; likewise two bonds and fifty pounds, due May first, one thousand eight hundred and three; and one bond of five hundred dollars, due May first, one thousand eight hundred and six. My will is that the above obligations, principal and interest, are not to be paid to my executors, nor to give, devise and bequeath to my son John Carhart, my homestead plantation, to him, his heirs and assigns for ever. Likewise I give, devise and bequeath to my son Samuel Carhart, the tavern lot, to him, his heirs and assigns for ever. Likewise my will is that the two wood lots, one bought of Robert Shields, and the other bought of Thomas Bowlby, be equally divided; and I do give and devise and bequeath to my son John Carhart, his heirs and assigns for ever, one equal half of said lots so divided; and I likewise give and devise and bequeath to my son Samuel Carhart, to him, his heirs and assigns for ever, the other equal half of each lot so divided.
