PANHANDLE - Funeral services for Opal Carhart Cleek, 96, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Edwards, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.
She was born October 20, 1891 in Panhandle. She attended Fort Worth University and majored in art. She married Henry Harmon Cleek in Panhandle in 1912 and he died in 1948.
She moved to San Antonio in 1977 from Panhandle. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Golden Age Fellowship, a charter member of the Erudite Club, and a longtime member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, as well as former president. She was a former president of the Women's Society of the FUMC, Golden Age Fellowship.
Survivors include a son, H. Edward Cleek of San Antonio; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Melvin Delos Cleek, pilot of a 4-B Bomber in WWII. He was killed January 14, 1945 in an air strike in the Battle of the Bulge.
