Michael died at the age of 91 on 8 Mar 1901 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, United States. He was buried in Collamer Cemetery, DeWitt, Onondaga, New York, United States. One obituary appeared on 8 Mar 1901 in The Evening Herald, Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, United States.
Well Known Resident of This City Passes Away.
Michael Leyden, one of the oldest residents of this city, died at 10 o'clock this morning at his home, No. 1420 South State street. No man was better known in the southern portion of the city, where he had lived for nearly thirty five years.
Michael Leyden was a native of Ireland, where he was born in 1809. In 1824 he came to this county, and for a time was in the employ of Thomas McCarthy, in the town of Salina, the founder of the well-known McCarthy firm.
Mr. Leyden later settled upon a farm near the village of Collamer, where he lived until 1859, when he removed to this city, where he had since lived. For many years he was engaged in the insurance business. Until two years ago he was in the possession of vigorous health. Since then he had failed, death being due to the infirmities of age.
Mr. Leyden, in 1835, married Miss Katherine Carhart of Collamer, who died in 1889. Ten children survive, namely, Maj. Maurice L. Leyden, of Rochester, Edwin C. Leyden of Rochester, Miss Elizabeth Leyden of Newark, N. J,, Hart C. Leyden, Isaac H. Leyden, Mrs. H. M. Clark, Mrs. James M. Turner, Mrs. James McFarrar, Miss Esther A. Leyden, and Miss Katherine Leyden, all of this city. The funeral will be held at the family residence on Monday afternoon.
A second obituary appeared on 10 Mar 1901 in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle in Rochester, Monroe, New York, United States.
DEATH OF MICHAEL LEYDEN.
Oldest Resident of Syracuse - Father of Major Maurice Leyden.
On Friday last, March 8th, occurred the death at his home in Syracuse, of a man whose residence there dated from the time that the now populous city was a veritable swamp, and which was known by the then appropriate but unimportant name of Salt Point. Michael Leyden was the name of the man, whose death removed the oldest resident of one of the largest cities in the state, and who, for eighty years had made it his home.
Mr. Leyden, had he lived until May 5th next, would have been 92 years of age. The sturdy physical attributes of the venerable Syracuse patriarch, while it was borne out in the long life given him, is further exemplified in the fact that he left ten children, two of whom are well known residents of Rochester, Major Maurice Leyden and E. C. Leyden. The other eight live in Syracuse.
