NOTED EDUCATOR DIES
Former Dean of Women at Northwestern University Passes Away at Pasadena
PASADENA, April 24. -- Mrs Ellen Soule Carhart, former dean of women at Northwestern University and writer of poems and short stories, died today at 627 North Kenmore avenue, Los Angeles, where she resided with her daughter, Dr. Margaret Carhart of the University of California in Los Angeles.
The former educator was the widow of the late Dr. Henry S. Carhart, professor of physics at the University of Michigan for many years. The family resided in this city for fifteen years preceding the physicist's death.
Mrs. Carhart's short stories were published in many periodicals and she later had several volumes of poetry published, the best known of which is "Overflow."
In 1916 and 1917, Mrs. Carhart was president of the Pasadena Browning Society, and in deference to her memory, that organization has decided to postpone its activities for one week, it is reported.
Mrs. Carhart was 82 years of age, and a native of Illinois. Besides Dr. Margaret S. Carhart, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Rose Cheeseman of Los Angeles and a son, Emory Richard Carhart of Detroit, Mich.
The funeral services will be held at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, Thursday at 3 p.m.
