Shino and Elizabeth were servants at Lanhydrock House in Cornwall where the 6th Viscount Clifdon, Thomas Charles Agar-Robertes, 6th Lord Robartes and his family lived. Shino worked on the farm and Elizabeth was a seamstress for the House. They lived in their own cottage. Emily, being the same age as the Agar-Robartes children, grew up with their children and was treated as one of them. The Viscount helped to put her through nursing school and no doubt had a hand in her working at the Soldiers Hospital. When she married, she and Thomas were set up in comfortably in a house ready to raise their family much due to the Viscount's generosity. [Source: Nic Carhart]
Thomas fought in the First World War for Britain and took advantage of owning land in Canada through the Soldiers Settlement Board. Emily was a trained nurse and worked in the London Soldiers Hospital during the war.

The family set sail on the ship "Albertic" from Southhampton, England on May 5, 1928 and arrived in Quebec nine days later. The family then headed to Saint John, New Brunswick by train. They were first granted land in Henderson Settlement, New Brunswick but found it unsuitable for farming and living upon arrival. Two weeks later they were taken to a farm in Carsonville, New Brunswick (near Sussex, New Brunswick) and settled there. The farm has since passed from Thomas and Emily to his youngest son, Leonard and his wife Elizabeth Ramona "Betty" (Stevens) Carhart, and then to their son, Michael Allen Carhart and Sally Patricia (McEwen) Carhart. This couple still lives there in the original house in 2019. The house ironically was built by Sally's ancestors in the 1800s.
Family lore (from g-grandmother Fanny) was that Leonard, who was just about 2 years old, cried the whole trip across the Atlantic. She also always said that among the passengers that she got to know over the trip was Johnny Cash's future mother-in-law. [Source: Nic Carhart]
