Mrs. Elizabeth Gravatt -
One of the largest funerals that have recently taken place in our town, was that of Mrs. Gravatt, wife of our esteemed citizen, Mr. Ezekiel D. Gravatt. Mr. Gravatt has had a repetition of bereavements, and this last stroke of an all wise Providence must indeed be the heaviest of all for him to bear. To lose children is a heavy affliction, yet the bereaved parents have each other to sympathize with mutually in their loss; but when the partner of one's life is taken away and one who has been such a "help-mate" as the deceased, surely the stroke must be such as none can realize save those who have met with a similar loss, with parallel reasons - from a human standpoint - for the continuance of life. It must be hard, under such heavy bereavement, to exercise that faith that looks Heavenward and says "He doeth all things well"
Mrs. Gravatt was well know in this community, where she was born, married, and has always lived. She was an exemplary member of the M.E. Church, and her death was another proof of the power of religion to sustain in that hour. Just a few days before her death, while lying upon the couch of affliction, she asked to have framed and hung before her bed, the motto, "Simoly to Thy Cross I cling". and then clinging, she passed from the land of crosses to the center of crowns.
She was the daughter of Joel Carhart, Esq., of Milltown, near New Brunswick, for so many years a resident of our town.
The funeral took place in the M.E. Church on Monday afternoon, under the direction of the pastor, Rev. Mr. Moffett, and the remains were carried to the family plot at Rose Hill Cemetery for interment.
Ezekiel married second, Mrs. Melissa Hankins, widow of Smith Hankins.
Ezekiel died at the age of 75 on 24 Feb 1900 in Newburgh, Orange, New York, United States. His obituary appeared in the Red Bank Register, Red Bank, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States, Page 4, Column 3.
Ezekiel Gravatt.
Ezekiel Gravatt, for many years a resident of Matawan, died on Saturday, February 24, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Bloomer of Newburg, New York. He was 75 years old and death was caused by locomotor ataxia.
Mr. Gravatt was born near Perrineville. He went to Matawan in 1846 and worked as a wheelwright. He afterward became a carpenter and assisted in building Cartan & Devlin's mill. Upon the completion of the mill he accepted a position with its owner and remained at the mill until forced to give up work about five years ago on account of poor health. Since then he had lived with his daughter.
Mr. Gravatt was twice married. His first wife was Elizabeth Carhart, daughter of Joel Carhart. By her he had nine children, the only surviving one being the daughter with whom he lived at the time of his death. His first wife died in 1876 and five years later he married Mrs. Melissa Hankins, widow of Smith Hankins. She survives him, but he had no children by his second wife.
Mr. Gravatt joined the Matawan Methodist church in 1847 and he had always remained in active membership. With the exception of Alexander H. Harris he was the oldest living member of the church. He had been a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Matawan ever since its organization.
Ezekiel's estate was probated first on 6 Mar 1900 in Orange County, New York, United States and second on 17 Apr 1900 in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States.
