MANY MOURN FOR HIGHTSTOWN LADY
Services Over "Aunt Lydia" Carhart, Borough's Oldest Resident, Conducted Yesterday
HIGHTSTOWN, March 25 - The funeral of Mrs. Lydia Ann Carhart was held from the home of her son-in-law, Abram R. Ralph, 144 Franklin Street, yesterday afternoon. The Rev. Dr. Lawrence Correll, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Allen Stults.
The life of Mrs. Carhart or "Aunt Lydia," as for many years she was affectionately known was a quiet one but but not the less interesting. She was the widow of David Carhart and the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Chambers all of whom were prominent citizens in and near Hightstown all their lives.
Mrs. Carhart was born November 18, 1822, two miles from Hightstown on a farm. She is survived by three sons: Zachariah C. of Hamilton Square, James N. of Alexander, Va., and one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Ralph of Hightstown; ten grandchildren, Raymond, Florence and Pearl Carhart, John and James Carhart, Hat?? Applegate, Anna and Jeremy? Carhart, Tom? Garman? and Oliver Holmes and two great-grandchildren, Joseph Holmes and Norman Garman, also survive her.
Mrs. Carhart was the oldest resident in Hightstown. She was also the oldest member of the Methodist Church of Hightstown, where she worshiped for 77 years. "Aunt Lydia" was one of those sunny-souled characters whose presence was always sunshine and this is what kept her from showing the weight of over 93 years.
