Richard Bedle's Mill
The Richard Bedle Grist Mill was owned and operated by his father, Thomas Bedle jr., before 1800. It was located on upper Luppalatong Creek, about two miles south of Keyport. Before 1829, Thomas Bedle took his son, Richard, in partnership with him, who operated it for many years. Thomas Bedle died in 1847.
James Bedle, a brother of Richard, learned the milling business in his father's mill, and in later years, he and his father-in-law, James Madison Burrowes, erected a grist mill on the corner of Front and Osborn Sts., Keyport. The first day the mill was to be operated, Mr. Burrowes died suddenly, and thereafter Mr. Bedle conducted the mill.
The mill was located where the Bayshore Hardware store now stands. The stream which supplied the power for the mill was fed from a pond which covered properly south of the railroad tracks between Main and Beers St. The stream course was in a northeasterly direction and came through a part of what is now the Masonic Temple property and through the culvert to the mill and out into Raritan Bay. The section north of Third St. is a natural "hollow" and in heavy rainstorms, the culvert literally resembles a "mill stream."
Richard died at the age of 62 on 7 Sep 1872 in Matawan, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States. He was buried in Cedarwood Cemetery, Keyport, Monmouth, New Jersey, United States [Find A Grave Memorial# 20185685].
