Sylvanus Carhart
Port Monmouth lost one of its best known and most respected citizens Wednesday of last week in the death of Sylvanus Carhart, who passed away at Riverview hospital, where he had been a patient four days. Double pneumonia was the cause of death.
Mr. Carhart was 69 years of age, but he had lived at Port Monmouth since he was a boy. During the World war he was employed by the ordnance department of the federal government as a carpenter at Sandy Hook, and he received an honorable discharge from this service after the armistice. Subsequently he was employed as a weigher by Collins Bros at the Port Monmouth dock. Five years ago he retired from active work.
Mr. Carhart was a social member of the Port Monmouth fire company and of Independent fire company of Belford. He was intensely interested in the Port Monmouth company and for a number of years past he had done most of the work at the firehouse of janitorial duties without charge for his services. He was always a generous supporter of movement for the benefit of the Middletown township fire department. He had a genial disposition and neighborly traits and all who knew him became his friends.
Mr. Carhart was a widower. His wife, who before her marriage to him was Miss Lillian May Meyers died a number of years ago. Two daughters and a son survive Mr. Carhart, they being Miss Aleta Carhart of Long Branch, Miss Leola Carhart of Amsterdam, New York, and Lloyd Carhart of Port Monmouth. Three sisters also survive Mr. Carhart. They are Mrs. Cornell Lyke and Mrs. Ella Bade of Port Monmouth and Mrs. Deborah Carter of Red Bank.
The Port Monmouth and Belford firemen held a service at Mr. Carhart's late residence Friday evening with Rev. Wesley J. Wainwright of Belford in charge. The funeral was held at the house Saturday after noon. It was conducted by Rev. Mr. Wainwright, assisted by Rev. Elija Reid of Matawan, There was a large attendance and many beautiful floral tributes. The body and casket, surrounded by flowers, were conveyed to the grave on the aparatus of the Port Monmouth fire company. The interment was at Keyport. Firemen acted as bearers.
