From 1910 to 1914, the Carhartt Automobile Corporation produced cars in Detroit, Michigan at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Townsend (now Baldwin). Carhartt used a Continental engine for his autos. The mid-priced autos were unable to compete with the less expensive Ford Model T or the more expensive classic Packards, so Hamilton closed up shop in 1914, producing less than 500 autos.

Carhartt Dies of Auto Hurts
Will Be Buried with Wife Thursday
Hamilton Carhartt, founder of the overall manufacturing firm bearing his name, died at 1:50 p. m. Wednesday at Grosse Pointe Cottage Hospital of injuries received Monday in an automobile collision that took the life of his wife, Mrs. Annette Welling Carhartt.
Carhartt was 82 years old and Mrs. Carhartt 77. Double funeral services for the couple will be held Thursday.
Meanwhile, police were searching Wednesday for additional witnesses to the fatal crash, which occurred at St. Paul Ave. and University Place, Grosse Pointe.
Statements so far obtained from witnesses divide the blame between John Pickett, the Carhartt chauffeur, and sixteen-year-old Edward H. Snethkamp, of 630 Lakepointe Ave., Grosse Pointe Park, driver of the other car. Pickett was hurt slightly and the youth escaped injury.
The crash, which occurred at 2:30 p. m., took place only a short distance from the home of Wylie Welling Carhartt, of 385 University Place, Grosse Pointe, a son with whom the Carhartts had lived since 1933.
The double funeral for Mr. and Mrs. Carhartt will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Harold D. Baker, at 319 Lincoln Road, Grosse Pointe. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Services for Mrs. Carhart were to have been held in Mrs. Baker's home at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday, less than an hour after death came to her husband. The plans were quickly altered, however.
Besides Mrs. Baker and the son with whom they lived, the Carhartts are survived by another son, Hamilton, Jr., of Carhartt, Ky.; a granddaughter, Gretchen Welling Carhartt, and Mrs. Carhartt's sister, Miss Mary Welling, of the Pasadena Apartments.
