J. S. Carhart Dies Suddenly At Home Monday From Heart Attack.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 from the home at 312 West Eighth street in Wayne for J. S. Carhart who passed away suddenly Monday afternoon following a heart attach, aged 84 years. Rev. W. E. Braisted, Baptist pastor, officiated. Masons conducted committal rites at Greenwood cemetery.
John Samuel Carhart was born on a farm near Platteville, in Grant county, Wis., April 5, 1849, and grew to manhood in that vicinity. He married Miss Elizabeth Ivey at Platteville in 1874. The earlier years of their married life Mr. and Mrs. Carhart spent on a farm in Iowa county, Wis. In 1885 they moved to Monona county, Iowa, to a farm they previously bought and remained there until 1906 when they retired from active business and moved into Mapleton, Iowa. In 1915 the Carharts came to Wayne, their home since.
Mr. Carhart, friendly by nature, made many friends. He kept a keen interest in life and all it involved.
Deceased became a member of the Masonic order in Ferrin lodge at Monfort, Wis., and he affiliated with Quarry lodge at Mapleton, Iowa, March 13, 1886, and with Wayne lodge No. 120, June 25, 1926. Mr. Carhart received the Masonic 50-year badge June 12, 1931.
Besides Mrs. Carhart, who has been ill for many months, deceased leaves three sons, C. E. Carhart and A. B. Carhart of Wayne, and Dr. E. C. Carhart of Los Angeles, Calif. Mrs. E. C. Carhart is here and Dr. Carhart was here a few weeks ago. There are six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were D. H. Cunningham, Paul Mines, L. B. McClure, F. S. Berry, J. H. Pile and A. T. Claycomb.

Mrs. J. S. Carhart Passes Away At Home Friday At Advanced Age.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the home in Wayne for Mrs. J. S. Carhart who passed away Friday evening, June 29, aged 83 years and 1 month. Rev. P. A. Davies, Presbyterian minister, and the Beckenhauer service had charge. F. L. Blair, Wm. Beckenhauer, Prof. G. W. Costerisan and Dr. J. G. W. Lewis sang "Lead, Kindly Light." Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
Mrs. Carhart had been in failing health for many months.
Mrs. Carhart's maiden name was Miss Elizabeth A. Ivey. She was a daughter of James and Mary A. Ivey and was born May 29 , 1851 at Potosi, Wis. The family moved to a farm near Platteville, Wis., and there deceased grew to womanhood. In 1874 she was married to John S. Carhart, also of Platteville. The earlier years of their married life were spent on a farm in Iowa county, Wis. In 1885 they moved to Monona county, Iowa, to a farm which they bought previously. There they remained until 1906 when they retired from active business and located in Mapleton, Iowa. The Carharts came in 1915 to Wayne, their home since.
Mr. Carhart died June 19, 1933. Deceased leaves three sons, C. E. Carhart and A. B. Carhart of Wayne, and Dr. E. C. Carhart of Los Angeles, Calif. There are six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mrs. Carhart is also survived by one brother, Edward, and two sisters, Julia and Ellen, of Platteville, Wis.
In her days of better health Mrs. Carhart took active interest in community affairs. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Eastern Star. As wife and mother in the home and as a friend in the community she was highly esteemed.
Those here from out of town Sunday for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Chas., Huling of South Sioux City, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Davies of Wakefield, Mrs. D. D. Cameron and son and Mrs. Howard Cameron of Mapleton, Iowa, Ralph Carharts of Randolph, and Art Lehmans of Wakefield.
Pallbearers were R. W. Ley, F. S. Berry, F. L. Blair, H. B. Craven, James Pile and L. B. McClure.
